How to Change the Water Pump on a Jeep Liberty

  1. Install a drain pan under the radiator of your Jeep.
  1. Drains the cooling system from the underside of the vehicle turning the radiator drain plug counterclockwise with a wrench. Let all of the coolant drain into the drain pan and replace the radiator drain plug.
  1. Open the cover and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery with a wrench.
  1. Remove the water pump fan coupling assembly turning the lock nut counterclockwise with a wrench.
  1. Remove the fan shroud nuts with a wrench.. Lift the shroud and fan coupling assembly out of the engine bay and set them aside.
  1. Relieves tension on fan belt tensioner turning the tensioner slightly counterclockwise with a 3/8″ ratchet wrench with a 6-inch extension. Remove the fan belt from the pulleys by hand.
  1. Remove the lower radiator hose clamps. with a small wrench and remove the hose.
  1. Remove the bolts from the water pump with a wrench.. Carefully remove the water pump from the engine block. Do not use sharp tools to start the pump as it may damage the contact surfaces. Discard the old water pump gasket.
  1. Use a gasket sealer to hold a new water pump gasket to the engine block. Reattach the water pump to the engine block with the original bolts.
  1. Replace the lower radiator hose with new clamps.
  1. Relieves tension on belt tensioner and change the fan belt. Restore belt tension by removing the ratchet wrench.
  1. Lift off the fan shroud and fan assembly and carefully slide them into the engine compartment. Replace the bolts on the fan shroud and the nut that secures the fan assembly to the water pump.
  1. Replace the negative battery terminal.
  1. remove the radiator and refill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of water and coolant. Replace the radiator cap.
  1. Start your Jeep and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks under the vehicle.
  1. Turn off the vehicle and recheck the coolant level. Add a 50/50 mix of coolant and water to bring the level up to the full mark if necessary. Retighten connections if leaks are detected.
