1- Test the sensor with an OBD II scanner scanner

Use an OBD II scanner to read troubleshooting codes from your car’s ECM (engine control module), which can indicate specific sensors that aren’t working properly. The vehicle’s OBD II terminal is usually located within two or three feet of the steering column, and is usually protected by a panel that can be easily removed by hand.

Plug the scanner into the terminal, turn on the scanner, and turn the ignition key to the accessory position. If the scanner doesn’t translate OBD II codes, you’ll need to do so using a repair manual below, or websites like AutoZone, OBD codes and others listed in the References section.

Test the related parts that show up on the OBD scanner

Test the parts related to the sensors that show up on the OBD scanner. For example, the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor will not work properly if it has a vacuum leak or an air intake performance problem.

For the MAP sensor, check the air intake assembly and all of its joints to make sure air can pass through the assembly to the manifold. Also check all vacuum hoses for leaks or displacement of their proper nozzles. If you detect a vacuum leak from any of the hoses or the air intake, seal it with duct tape as a temporary fix.

2- Use a multimeter or voltmeter to test the wiring

Use a multimeter or voltmeter to test the wiring and electrical connection leading to the sensors. Disconnect the electrical connection and touch the multimeter probes to the car’s electrical harness. Start the engine and put the multimeter in its voltage position.

Different sensors will have different voltage readings, however, if you don’t detect any voltage coming from the vehicle’s electrical system, the wiring may need to be replaced. For example, the MAP sensor should be getting between 4.5 and 5.0 volts from the engine.

Test sensor ground wire

To test the MAP sensor this way connect the voltmeter to the MAP sensor by connecting the black wire to a good ground and the red wire to the center of the three wires from the MAP sensor electrical connector.

  • Turn on the ignition key with the engine off. The voltage displayed on the voltmeter should be between 4.5 and 5 volts.
  • Start the engine and the voltage displayed should be 0.5 to 1.5 volts at sea level or in the closed position. The voltage will decrease as altitude increases. If the voltage differs too much in any of the tests, the MAP sensor is cold. Replace it.

3- How to test 4-wire MAP sensor

These types of four-wire MAP sensors have a temperature sensor with them, it is for this reason that they have 4 terminals, you should know that these types of sensors are not usual in European cars. This class of sensor is tested the same way as the 3-wire MAP sensor, only on the 4-wire you will also need to test the temperature pin. Finally the reading that this terminal should show on the multimeter is only 5 V.
