How to start a car with a bad alternator
An alternator produces power by turning three plates through a winding of copper wires. As more boards fail, power drops to levels that will eventually cause the battery to die and the failure ignition system.
Many times, the alternator cannot be “stressed” by a dead or dying battery, and inside the alternator is a rotor that spins on a set of ball bearings. And as these bearings wear, they can “seize” as they develop flat spots. This causes a horrible noise and can turn into a sustained grinding noise.

- Use another car with a good battery to start your car. Make sure the car is off.
- Connect the positive (red) cable to the positive terminal on the car with the faulty alternator. Connect the red cable on the opposite end of the jumper cables to the positive terminal of the car with the good battery.
- Proceed to connect the negative (black) cable to the negative terminal of the car with the good battery. Connect the other end of the black wire to a place on the motor for ground. This can be anywhere on the engine block that is clean and not painted or chromed. Never put the negative cable of the car that is going to be started on the battery.
- Start the car with the good battery and let it run for about three to four minutes. Try to start the car with the faulty alternator; if you need more charge, please leave more time.
- Remove the black wire from the engine block and remove the red wire from the car’s positive terminal with the alternator problem. Hold the wires away from each other as you remove the black wire from the jump starter and remove the red terminal.
- Drive the vehicle directly to a mechanic. a bad alternator it will mean that you will not have lights unless the battery has a full charge that will last a little longer.
Advice
Use a cardboard box to hold the wires while you apply the changes, and remove it if you can’t keep the wires separate.
