How to Change the Brakes on a Chevrolet Aveo
Removing and changing the brakes on a Chevrolet Aveo vehicle can be done with no hassle. Just follow the steps listed below.
- Raise the car with the floor jack and remove one of the wheels by turning the lug wrench counterclockwise.. Put the wheel aside, away from the car. If you have an older model Aveo with rear drum brakes, skip to step 6.
- Remove the caliper by turning the rear mounting bolts counterclockwise, then slide the caliper and pads off the rotor. Remove the pads from the caliper, then attach the caliper to the top of the control arm. Don’t let the caliper hang from the brake lines.
- Remove the rotor by pulling firmly on the hub. Replace with a new rotor, or reline existing unit, then press rotor into place over hub.
- Change the brake pads for new units by pressing them against the caliper pistons. Slide the caliper over the rotor, then secure the mounting bolts by turning them clockwise. Some calipers can be difficult to compress once expanded, but removing the master cylinder cap will reduce the pressure in the system enough to press them into place.
- Replace the wheel by turning the studs clockwise, in an alternating pattern.; then lower the Aveo from the floor socket.
- (Wheel removed.) Remove the drum retaining bolt by turning it counterclockwise. The set screw is at the front of the drum, a little off center from the hub. Once free, the drum can be removed above the brakes.
- Replace the brakes by releasing the long springs from the hooks on each brake, then turn the center spring bolt counterclockwise. The new brake is held in place by the spring bolt and then reattaches to the long springs via the brake hooks. Replace the new or refurbished drum by sliding it over the brakes and turning the stud bolt clockwise.
- Replace the wheel, if applicable, and lower the Aveo off the floor jack.
