A fuse is a resistance device that protects a circuit from overloads. It is a short piece of wire that is designed to melt and break when exposed to excess electrical current. A fuse is connected in series to the circuit it protects. The steps to connect the accessories to the fuse panels are as follows:
- Locate the car’s fuse boxwhich is usually located behind the dash or inside the glove box.
- Locate the amp rating for the accessory you are installing. This is the amperage the fixture is rated for and it is only safe to use the fixture at or below this value. Amperage values are listed in the accessory manual near the beginning of the installation section.
- Install the appropriate circuit in the fuse box in the slot next to the connector you will use for the car. Any open slot in the fuse box will suffice.
- Slide the accessory connector plug into the car’s fuse box. If there is no connector pin, unscrew the fuse box connector screw with a screwdriver. Strip 1/2 inch of coating from the wire with a wire crimping tool. Slide the bare wire under the connector and tighten the screw.
