The steps to follow to replace an oil filter on a Toyota RAV4 are as follows:

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle with the jack and place it on the jack stands.. Make sure the vehicle is securely attached to the jack stands before you drive under it. Place the drain pan under the oil filter.
  1. Unscrew the oil filter housing drain bolt using the 3/8 socket, extension and sockets, then place the drain tube included with the oil filter kit into the hole. Let the oil drain out of the filter and into the drain pan, then remove the drain tube by tilting it to the side.
  1. Unscrew the oil filter. Connect the oil filter wrench to the 3/8-inch nut, then unscrew the oil filter housing from the engine. Slide the oil filter cartridge out of the engine, then press the replacement into place with your hands. Slide the o-ring around the filter housing off of the housing, then install the filter replacement kit.
  1. Reinstall the oil filter housing onto the engine with the oil filter wrench and ratchet.. Next, install the O-ring from the drain bolt kit into the housing and reinstall the drain bolt with the ratchet.
  1. Open the cap, take out the oil dipstick and check the gauge on the bottom to determine the approximate amount of oil you need. Open the oil cap and pour 1/4 quart of the weight of motor oil specified in the vehicle’s owner’s manual into the engine.
  1. Check the dipstick again after 5 minutes to allow the oil to settle.. If you need to add more oil, repeat the last step.

This way you will be able to change the RAV4’s oil filter quickly and without complications.

Used oil can be recycled at a local parts store or automotive fluid recycling center, free of charge. Do not pour the old oil into the street drain or pour it on the ground, as it is illegal and harmful to the environment.
