Aptera Motors It is a company with more than 15 years, although in reality, the company that we know today was founded in 2020. It currently has a headquarters in the city of San Diego, California.
Several years ago, they revealed an updated version of their EV that uses solar energy for its autonomy, in addition to lightweight materials and aerodynamics.
The incredible thing about that car is that it can convert solar energy into a power plant with a range of 64 kilometers per day. This means that to charge, it would not need to be plugged into the mains as vehicles like the Model S either Model X of Tesla.
The truth is that after presenting his plan on how and where he would build his car, he gained the trust of thousands of people who immediately reserved theirs.
The design of this car is very similar to that of an airplane, this helps it to have a coefficient of drag of 0.13 using 100kWh of energy. This means that its battery is 100 kWh, it offers a total autonomy of 1,600 km.
Currently, Aptera has reported that it already has just over 20,000 reservations for its EV on its list. These orders will begin to be scheduled for delivery at the end of this 2022.
An electric vehicle powered by solar energy
In the conference that took place in Austin Texas called “Move America” was where the current CEO of Aptera motors, Chris Anthony, made the presentation of this car. It was here that Chris commented that this is the second attempt as the company was originally founded in 2006 and they were aiming to build a super efficient 3-wheel electric car.
Unfortunately that project did not work as they thought. It was then that in 2020, the founders resumed the project with the lessons learned, but this time carrying out a crowdfunding campaign.
The result was a solar-powered electric car with a range of up to 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers). Aptera immediately received $4 million in funding and with it more than 6,000 pre-orders. Although at the time of writing this article they already have more than 22,000 reservations and to do so, buyers need to make a deposit of 100 USD. This is equivalent to 800 million dollars, the truth is that production has not yet started, but the first deliveries are expected to begin at the end of this 2022.
As for prices, the company will have 4 models. The first will be priced at $25,800 for 250 miles of range, $29,700 for 400 miles of range, $34,500 for 600 miles and $44,800 for 1,600 km range (1,000 miles).
Due to the lightness of its design, it weighs up to 67% less than some cars already known today. Without a doubt, these EVs could be the car of the future, just as we imagined it a few decades ago. After a failed start in the year 2000 when it was thermal, this teardrop-shaped two-person vehicle with solar panels, scissor doors and 3 wheels resurfaced like a phoenix from its ashes.
