  1. Mount the starter relay. There are two main types, the simplest is used for inertial coupling starters, and is normally mounted in the vehicle’s wheel well. The second type also acts as a mechanical solenoid to engage the starter pinion with the flywheel when starting the vehicle. This is mounted directly on the starter motor itself. They both work and are connected in a similar way.
  1. Connect the starter motor cable to the switching output. The output terminal and battery connection are typically much heavier than the other terminals on the relay as they carry much more current between the battery and the starter. They can be 10 gauge or larger, depending on the vehicle and the size of the starter.
  1. Connect the smaller terminal or terminal post marked SIGNAL, SWITCH or IGN to the contact switch. This terminal goes to one side of the magnetic coil inside the relay. The other side of the coil is connected to the other smaller terminal which may be marked negative or ground. This should be connected below. It is normally connected to the frame or negative terminal of the battery. If this is your first time wiring, use 16 gauge wire and quality insulated crimp terminals. Sometimes the negative starter relay is routed through a neutral safety switch and then to ground, especially on vehicles with automatic transmissions.
  1. Connect the positive terminal of the battery to the other large terminal, which may be marked BATTERY. Sometimes there may be a fuse interposed between the battery and the starter solenoid to protect against burned wires or starting a fire if the starter develops a direct short.
  1. Check the wiring of the starter relay. one more time and then try trying to start the vehicle. If the vehicle won’t start, check for a loud click from the relay when it starts. Also check for 12 volts at the coil relay input to the negative of the meter on the vehicle frame. Make sure the negative lead of the relay coil is grounded with the vehicle in neutral.
