How to remove the battery from the Ford F-150
- Open the hood of the F-150. For the most part, Ford places the batteries on F-Series trucks in the front passenger-side corner just behind the headlight. Locate the battery hold-down clamp and use a ratchet, extension, and socket to release the battery from the battery tray.
- If the truck is older and you may notice that you don’t have a clamp to hold the battery, get one. A loose battery is not only dangerous in a frontal collision, but battery vibration is one of the main causes of premature battery cell damage. And the battery will vibrate more if it is not properly attached to the tray.
- Use a hand wrench to first loosen the negative terminal clamp with black wire. Continue loosening until the clamp can be twisted with a couple of channel locks and then removed from the negative terminal post. Make sure the key and channel locks do not contact the two terminal posts at the same time.
- Removing the negative battery terminal first reduces the chance of electrical sparks being emitted when the positive clamp is loosened with the metal wrench. Batteries contain dilute caustic sulfuric acid which can emit hydrogen gas. This gas is extremely flammable and, although unlikely, can cause the battery to explode.
- Loosen the red cable positive battery terminal clamp until you can move the clamp with the channel locks. Once you’ve removed the positive cable, carefully lift the battery out of the tray and out of the engine compartment.

- If you are reconnecting the battery or installing a new one, connect the red positive cable first, then the black negative cable. Again, this is to keep the risk of electrical sparks low.
- Always wear safety glasses and gloves when you are replacing or working on a battery.. In the unlikely event of an explosion, you should have full protection for your eyes and hands. A battery explosion will result in plastic projectiles in the battery case and sulfuric acid spray.
- On newer versions of the F-150, placing a computer memory saver in the power jack/cigarette lighter port will help prevent loss of PCM (powertrain control module) memory, anti-theft radio and internal alarm system installed by the manufacturer.
- If you are replacing the battery, most auto parts stores will charge you an additional core charge with the new battery which will be returned to you once you bring in the old battery, as long as it isn’t leaking or cracked.
